Negative Thinking

1. Giving place to negative thinking only bears bad fruit.

  • Proverbs 23:7a [If you give place to negative thoughts, you will become a negative person.] For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.
  • Proverbs 15:13b [Sad and negative thoughts weaken our spirits and lead to discouragement.] By sorrow of the heart, the spirit is broken.
  • Luke 6:45 [Those whose hearts and minds are filled with negative thoughts usually spread them by voicing them.] A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good: and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.
  • Romans 8:6,7 [Negative thinking is not walking in "newness of life," but in the old carnal nature which is against God.] For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity [hostile] against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. [See also Eph.4:17.]
  • 1 Corinthians 13:5 [If we're walking in love, we don't think negatively towards others.] [Love] doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil.
  • Hebrews 12:15 [Harboring negative, critical thoughts can lead to bitterness.] Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God, lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled.

2. We need to ask the Lord to "wash" our hearts and "renew" our minds to think only His positive, good thoughts.

  • Psalm 51:2,7,10 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. ... 7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. ... 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
  • Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
  • 1 Corinthians 6:11b But ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the Name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
  • Ephesians 4:22-24 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
  • Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.
  • Hebrews 10:22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

3. Ask the Lord to help you learn to recognize the Enemy's negative thoughts so you can resist them!

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:21 Prove [test or try] all things; hold fast that which is good.
  • Matthew 7:16-20 [What kind of fruit do these thoughts bear?] Ye shall know them by their fruits. ... 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
  • 2 Corinthians 2:11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.
  • Hebrews 3:12,13 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. 13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
  • Hebrews 4:12 [Measure your thoughts with the Word.] For the Word of God is quick [alive], and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. [See also Acts 17:11.]
  • 1 John 4:1a Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try [test] the spirits whether they are of God.

  • 1 Peter 1:8 Whom having not seen, ye love; in Whom, though now ye see Him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory.

6. Take a positive stand against the Devil and his negativeness.

  • 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: 4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) 5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.
  • Ephesians 6:10,11,16,17 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the Devil. 16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17 And take the helmet of Salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

8. Think about Jesus!

9. God not only knows our thoughts, He can help us to have positive ones.

  • 1 Chronicles 28:9 [King David said:] And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve Him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the Lord searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek Him, He will be found of thee. ...

And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; He calleth thee. 50 And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus. 51 And Jesus answered and said unto him, what wilt thou that I should do unto thee?
