We so
glad that you reached out today, and we are sorry that you are feeling
unhappy and miserable. You also have also indicated that you have been
having thoughts of wanting to end your life. Please promise yourself
that you will reach out if you feel that you are going to hurt
yourself. Talk to your parents, friends, other family members, or call
911 if you feel that you cannot keep yourself safe.
It
is also important to identify coping strategies that you can use as an
alternative to hurting yourself. Some people enjoy journaling,
listening to music, exercising, talking to friends, or doing artwork.
Try to identify what things you can do in order to help you stay safe. I
have also attached a link to 99 coping skills that you may find helpful
http://www.bing.com/search?q=99+coping+skills&src=IE-SearchBox&Form=IE8SRC.
Talk to
your medical doctor and let him/her know what is going on with you.
The doctor will be able to rule out any medical reasons for the emotions
you are experiencing and will give you the proper diagnosis of your
condition.
Based
in the brief information you indicated in your email, you may have
depression. Just as medication is often described with some medical
conditions, medication is sometimes indicated to help with depression.
In addition, therapy can also be very effective in helping you identify
why you are unhappy and miserable. The therapist can also help you
identify coping skills to help you when you are feeling as if you want
to hurt yourself.
You
state that you are a college student. Many colleges and universities
offer free counseling to students. Also, the Boys Town National Hotline
has referral information for therapists. You can also call your local
United Way Information and Referral @911 to get a referral.
Do not
feel dumb or stupid for your feelings; you have done a very brave thing
by reaching out for help. Please get the help that you need and
deserve. Boys Town National Hotline has crisis counselors available,
24/7 at 1-800-448-3000. Please let us know how you are doing. You are
not alone.
Take care,
Nancy, crisis counselor
