Police: 2 deaths in Reno's Caughlin Ranch ruled a murder-suicide: father and 6-year-old girl (with video)

3:42 p.m. update

Police say they suspect the Caughlin Ranch man who is believed to be involved in the murder-suicide of his 6-year-old daughter called emergency dispatch about his daughter’s apparent drowning before taking his own life.
They base that on three points: His wife and son were at work and school at the time of the incident, an unidentified man made the call and no one else was found in the home, Reno police Sgt. Alan Salter said.
When police arrived just before 3 p.m. Monday, they found 46-year-old Adam Alexander Scott with a gunshot wound to his head in the garage of his home on the 4900 block of Mountainshyre Road in Caughlin Ranch, in southwest Reno.
The man who called said there had been a drowning, police said.
Upon arrival, police also found a note from Scott.
“Content of the note was descriptive enough to come to a finding of murder-suicide,” Salter said.
But why Scott allegedly killed his daughter before taking his own life remains a mystery and police are looking into his background to answer that question, Salter said.
Scott was unemployed, and was a stay-at-home dad at the time of the incident, Salter said. His past employment was not immediately known.
Information into the cause of the girl’s death is pending and will require toxicology and laboratory testing, police said.
Salter said based on the note it is not believed Scott accidentally killed his daughter before killing himself.
Anyone with information is asked to call Reno police at 775-334-2115.
