Woman Commits Suicide In Presence of NOPD Officers

Posted Monday, November 4th 2013 @ 3pm
A 38-year-old woman took her own life Monday morning in the presence of NOPD officers who were called by her husband to the couple's residence in the 2800 block of Laurel Street.
When they arrived on the scene after being summoned by the woman's husband, they spotted the woman in the driveway.  As they were talking with her, she reportedly pulled a handgun from a van.  After officers ordered her to drop the weapon and began backing away, she fired a single shot.
A female officer responded by discharging her weapon, but the NOPD says the Coroner's Office determined that the woman died from a single wound to the head and that she was not struck by the bullet fired by the officer.
The incident, which will be investigated by the Independent Police Monitor and by the NOPD, was classified as a suicide.
