Timothy Michael Russell was discovered unresponsive in his cell late Friday evening at San Quentin State Prison, according to a statement from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
He was pronounced dead at the prison the next morning, according to CDCR spokesman Michelle Mraule.
His death was being investigated as a suicide, Mraule said.
Russell was sentenced to death in 1999 for the slayings of deputies, James Lehmann Jr., 41, of Apple Valley, and Michael Haugen, 33, of San Jacinto.
The deputies were gunned down on Jan. 5, 1997, outside Russell’s residence while responding to a domestic violence call.
