People Who Ask THIS Question Are Happier and Healthier

Airbnb. It’s everywhere, including someone’s apartment in my NYC apartment building.
I recently had a conversation in my elevator with a vacationing person from Switzerland in which I asked the All-American question, “And what do you do?”
And he answered, “That question is considered rude in Europe. Don’t you have a better question?”
He continued, “Ask me what I dream about? What’s my favorite football team? What’s my favorite restaurant in the world? Anything else would be better than ‘What do you do?’”
Y’know…it was a damn good point. Do you really want to be identified by your profession when instead, you can be identified by your greatest dream, your all time number one song, or even your favorite flavor of ice cream?
“There’s Jane, the lawyer” is not nearly as awesome as “There’s Jane who loves vegan, peanut butter, chocolate chip ice cream and the Green Bay Packers.”
“There’s Maggie, the investment banker” is one fourth as cool as “There’s Maggie whose greatest dream is a world where women are in charge and Donald Trump is in a Mexican jail.”
“There’s Kevin, the yoga teacher” pales in comparison to “There’s Kevin who just told me if he could go back in time and give some advice to his eight year old self, it would be…Relax dude and enjoy being a kid!”
If you met Jane the lawyer and Maggie the investment banker and Kevin the yoga teacher in brief encounters, as most encounters usually are…you would probably never, ever remember them.
But if you met Jane the vegan ice cream lover and Maggie the Donald Trump incarcerator and Kevin the time traveling self-help guru…you might just remember them forever and ever and ever.
But even more importantly, YOU would be remembered for asking the question that freed their soul. Do you know how long people go without the chance to share their dreams? YEARS!

When is the last time someone asked what is your all time number one favorite flavor of ice cream let alone your greatest dream for the world?

Instead, our overworked nation talks all day long about what aches, whose pissing us off at work, why our spouse can’t get it right, that Kendall Jenner got some fancy car on her seventeenth birthday…
There’s a great story told by author Alan Cohen:
Many years ago in Thailand was a temple with a huge Golden Buddha.
Word came to this village that an army was about to invade.
So they covered the Golden Buddha with mud and concrete so it looked like a stone Buddha and the invading army would perceive no value in it.
Sure enough, the army rolled in and passed by the stone Buddha and had no reason to plunder it.
For many years, the army occupied the village with this Buddha. And there was a time where nobody remembered that the Buddha was golden.
And then one day, a young monk was meditating at the base of the Buddha, and a little piece of gold chipped off.
The monk excitedly told the other monks and they started hammering at the statue and realized that behind all the years of mud and dirt was a Golden Buddha.

The metaphor is that each of us is golden by nature.

We are born knowing everything. @yeahdave (Click to Tweet!)

But then we go to school and learn a certain way to live, and put a “casing of mud stone over the Buddha.”
And we start to believe we are the stone buddha, not the golden one.
Then something comes along that cracks our casing and knocks off a piece of our armor and in that moment, we look inside and see the gold.
***
So I ask you today as I’ve asked myself: what is your casing made of? Alcohol or anxiety or false pride or insecurity? Do you ever wonder if the GOLD still exists within you?
Today, ask the right questions and give someone a chance to reveal something profound, delicious, beautiful about themselves.
When you enable another to SHINE, you remind them that their raison d’etre is much more important than to achieve personal wealth or build their network.
Instead of “What do you do?”
Try this:
“What do you LIKE to do?”

Overcoming Depression

Overcoming Depression

Overcoming Depression

Pain, medicine, and depression were overwhelming me. The doctors told me I was winning my battle with leukemia, but I felt I was losing emotionally. The depression that had overtaken me seemed worse than physical disease.
As a rabbi I thought I had been trained to deal with depression. I was used to members of my congregation coming to me in times of suffering. People counted on me for comfort and understanding. Yet, here I was, unable to deal with my own depression.
Gradually, I was able to summon the strength within me. “God,” I prayed, “I’m trying to get up this mountain, but every time I get near the top, I get knocked down again. And, I’m not asking you to get me all the way to the summit, but could you hold my hand, and, please, don’t let me fall any further into the abyss?”

As I prayed, I searched for the divine spark within my spirit, for the power that I possessed, and which I believe all of us have. And within myself I found the courage and strength to keep fighting and not give up.

In the Jewish tradition, prayer doesn’t mean somehow finding God’s unlisted phone number or rubbing a magic lamp to bring forth a genie. It means looking into yourself, determining the meaning of your life, finding out what really is of value, and discovering what you believe. Prayer is the “self-judgment” that empowers us to reach higher, search deeper, and be true to ourselves.

Here are my suggestions for lifting yourself up in times of adversity:

LET YOUR SPIRIT SING. You don’t need a designated place or specific words. Sometimes the song we sing is joyous; sometimes it is a lament. Sometimes the song is loud and strong; sometimes it is weak and weary. Be in touch with your feelings and help yourself by opening your heart.
BE YOUR SPECIAL SELF. The story of the creation of the first human being, Adam, reminds us that each of us is unique.

Every human being represents the potential of the whole world. @TheRunningRabbi

I vividly recall the time when a young woman came to me talking about taking her life. She was very depressed and felt worthless. I told her that no matter how low a person sinks there is always something special and worthwhile in everyone. I took note of her smile, commented on her touching way of revealing her feelings, and told her that she was special. When she left my study I prayed I had said the right thing. Years later there was a knock on my study door. She had returned to thank me for helping her get through a very difficult time in her life..
REMIND YOURSELF WHAT REALLY MATTERS. When I was depressed in the hospital, I called to mind the good things in my life, what I had to live for. I pushed myself to remember Thanksgivings with my family, vacations in Colorado, running up the ski lift in Aspen, my daughter whirling around the ice skating rink. I thought of my wife and friends who were praying for me. I thought of the nurses who comforted me, and the doctors who struggled to keep me alive.
CONFRONT YOUR FEARS. When one of my congregants asked me, “What do I do in the middle of the night when no one is with me and I’m scared?” I told him, don’t try to run away and hide under the blanket. Sit up in bed and let all the nightmarish things play out before your eyes. Visualize everything that terrifies you. Then, when you have all this in front of you, acknowledge your fears. You have a right to feel frightened and depressed about awful things that have happened. But then realize that despite all that you are still very much alive!
GIVE OF YOURSELF. After my illness, I rededicated my life to helping others, especially those with cancer. Someone is always in need, someone whose plight is worse than our own. By helping others we give meaning to our lives.
LEARN SOMETHING NEW. A young woman, the mother of four children, came to see me. She had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. Along with her chemotherapy treatments, she treated herself to ski lessons. She wanted to experience something new to take her mind off her illness, to reaffirm her life. “There I was,” she told me, “hanging onto the tow rope, climbing that hill, exhilarated by being outside on a crisp winter day – thankful for the day, thankful for my life.”

Through my illness and depression, I learned to see the true worth within myself, to reflect on the meaning of my life, even to find meaning in my illness.

In a sense, my weakness made me a stronger person. I have learned that what “doesn’t destroy me, strengthens me.” Now, I empathize with other people in a way I was never able to before. I look for the goodness in people and in life. I look for the oneness of all humanity, and I find it.
When you are down, may you find strength in all you do and say and feel and think – and then the miracle will happen; the sun will shine for you; the world will once again be beautiful. Look for it. It will happen. I know.

“The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.” (Romans 8:11 NLT, second edition)
As believers, we have hope because we are going to live forever. Death is not the end. There is more to the story! One day your heart will stop beating, and that will be the end of your body. But it’s not going to be the end of you.
You were made in God’s image. You were made to last forever. This is not all there is. Why do we have hope? Because no matter how bad it seems on Earth, it’s just for a while. We’re going to spend trillions of years on the other side of eternity with no more sorrow, no more sadness, no more sickness, no more suffering.
The Bible says in Romans 8:11, “The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you” (NLT, second edition).
As a pastor, I’ve stood at the graveside of hundreds of families, and I know the difference between people with hope and those without. You can see it in their eyes. I’ve seen the terror in the eyes of people without hope. They’re thinking, “This is all I have. It’s over. I will never see this person again. It’s done. That’s all there is to life.”
I compare it to the thousands of people I’ve seen at funerals of a believer. They know this is just a transition step. They’re going into real life! They’re going to be with God for eternity. There is hope because they know they will be reunited one day. For a believer, death is not leaving home. It’s a homecoming.
In Jesus Christ, you live a life of no condemnation. You’re forgiven no matter what you do. It’s a life free from domination. You’re set free. You can change. God is changing you for the good, and then you live a life with no termination. You can live forever!

Talk It Over
  • Salvation in Jesus Christ makes all the difference in eternity. How should it affect how we live our lives?
  • What have you been set free from in this life because of your salvation?
  • Who can you share with today about the hope you have through Christ?

Meditate On This

Meditate On
Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”
Genesis 3:9
No More Hiding
After Adam and Eve fell into sin, they heard the sound of the Lord walking in the garden. What did they do? They hid themselves from His presence.
There is something God wants us to learn here about sin-consciousness: It makes us hide from Him when He actually wants to hang out with us. It makes us feel like we’ve fallen off His radar. It makes us feel afraid of Him when the safest and most comforting place in the world is in His presence.
Adam was sin-conscious. He said to God, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself” (Genesis 3:10). Now, this nakedness was not just physical. Adam saw himself unworthy of God. He was aware of his sin. He never had this awareness before. Prior to his act of disobedience, when God came into the garden, he would hang out with God without any sense of uncleanness. Then, he became conscious of his sin and ran away from God’s presence.
Beloved, God wants to hang out with you. But you can’t have an intimate relationship with Him when you are sin-conscious and feeling unworthy in His presence. The good news is that Jesus’ blood has removed all your sins and made you righteous. And God is so pleased with His Son’s sacrifice that He will by no means remember your sins (Hebrews 10:17). So come out of your hiding place and hang out boldly with God. It’s in His presence that you are empowered, refreshed and recharged. It’s in His presence that you receive from Him!

Daily Bible Quotes

Every day is a beautiful day for inspiration and faith from Daily Bible Quotes!

It's 9/7 and here is today's scripture:

Careless words stab like a sword, but wise words bring healing. The Lord hates those who tell lies but is pleased with those who keep their promises.

Make Love A Habit

Make Love a Habit

by Joyce Meyer - posted September 08, 2015

And let us consider and give attentive, continuous care to watching over one another, studying how we may stir up (stimulate and incite) to love and helpful deeds and noble activities.
- Hebrews 10:24
If we intend to make love a habit, then we must develop the habit of loving people with our words. The fleshly (lower, sensual) nature points out flaws, weaknesses, and failures. It seems to feed on the negatives in life. It sees and magnifies all that is wrong with people and things. But the Bible says in Romans 12:21 that we are to overcome evil with good.
Walking in the Spirit (continually following the prompting or leading, guiding, and working of the Holy Spirit through our own spirit instead of being led by our emotions) requires being positive. God is positive, and in order to walk with Him we must agree with Him (see Amos 3:3).
It is easy to find something wrong with everyone, but love covers a multitude of sins: Above all things have intense and unfailing love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins [forgives and disregards the offenses of others]. (1 Peter 4:8) Love does not expose faults; it covers them.

Today's Word

Today's Word with Joel and Victoria

Today’s Scripture

Rest for Your Soul
God wants to give you rest. He wants to refresh and restore your soul. It’s so easy sometimes to get caught up in the “busyness” of life. Before long, your mind, will and emotions are so “spun up” that you can barely think straight! But even in the hustle of life, you can find rest, ease and relaxation. That’s what God has for you. He wants you to enjoy your life. He wants you to come to Him so He can take care of everything that concerns you.
Imagine how you would feel if someone came up to you today and said, “Give me all of your monthly bills; I’m going to pay them.” You’d get pretty excited, wouldn’t you? But it wouldn’t happen until you did your part to actually hand that person your bills. They can’t pay them for you if you never release them. In the same way, when we release our cares and concerns to God, He promises to take care of them.
Today, choose to release your cares to the Lord. Let Him fill you with His peace and joy. Receive the rest that He promises and enjoy the fulfillment and blessing He has for you!

A Prayer for Today

“Father, today I humbly come to You. I choose to cast my cares on You so that I can live in Your rest. Thank You for Your goodness to me. Help me find ways to share Your goodness with those around me today in Jesus’ name. Amen.”
