Stress Is in the Eye of the Beholder

Stress Is in the Eye of the Beholder

Sometimes we get upset, angry, disappointed, or defeated when life unfolds differently than we anticipated. And how we respond to this non-stop flow of change that sweeps through us each day becomes the fabric of our life. It can offer us “aha! moments,” breakthroughs in stuck thinking, acceleration in the direction of our goals, opening of our heart, and it can also lead us to sadness, depression, resentment, regret, and in extreme cases, even shutting down, paralysis and withdrawing.
Change is a natural part of life, and we all face it at one time or another. Most of us are continually adjusting our behaviors, expectations, and personal desires making small tweaks that reflect our changing needs or interests. Some have even become time-honored rituals such as family reunions, seasonal cleanses, cleaning out closets, or going on retreat.

Change is the very first seed of personal transformation. So why run from it, when you can understand the power it offers you?

Our Response to Change
How you respond to change often depends on the results you think it will bring, such as excitement if you think it will bring a positive flow into your life, or sadness if you perceive that something you were used to is gone or will be gone. You may feel excited about change that involves a gain, such as a new baby, new house, new client, or a promotion to a new rank. But you may worry about a change that involves a loss, such as divorce, leaving a job, death, illness, moving to a new phase of your life.
Accepting a sudden, unexpected change – like divorce, a diagnosis, a death, being fired, someone you love being hurt, something you are attached to being taken away or shifted, or being transferred – can be the most jarring. You wake up and your world is different, or when tragedy strikes, our lives can shift in the blink of an eye. That’s because we paint our world with a brush of consistency even though we know that life is filled with inconsistencies.
What Do I Really Control?
We are all subtle control freaks! (Some of us not so subtle). And when we think we have lost control, then fear, anger, anxiety, stress, and disappointment set in. But if we can accept an uncontrollable change for what it is, accept the reality that we do not have full control over what happens in life, then it becomes easier to be graceful when change visits. If we can make small, incremental shifts towards the new scenario, we may suddenly realize that we are thriving.

We need to remind ourselves that if you don’t change…you don’t grow! @davidji_com

The key is to go back to what we can control, such as our thoughts (through meditation); our words (through impeccable & conscious speech); and our purposeful, unconditioned actions (through, as the Buddha said, right action…coming from a place of stillness and patience).
The Silver Lining in Change
Change – even if we don’t want it in the moment – can be beneficial. Change brings us new opportunities to evolve, adapt, and move beyond limiting beliefs. In every change is a lesson. In every change is an opening for something new, letting go of the old, stepping into something fresh, letting go of the stale, being open to the unexpected, stepping beyond limits. In every change we are reminded that we are an integrated thread in the universal fabric of existence – ever changing, ever merging. As one door closes, a new one opens. As one chapter ends, a new one begins. And this wild freight train of existence keeps on moving.
We’ve all heard Gandhi’s quote, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” For the next few weeks, let’s repeat the mantra, “I am the change!” with all that it brings and with all its scariness, uncertainty, loss of control, and transformational power.

So rather than resist and point at the change coming at us, let’s embrace the mantra “I am the change!” and let’s implement our own changes.

Are you ready to step into this new magnificent wave and ride it? The moment you feel a constriction that takes your breath away, scares you, or inhibits you, silently repeat the mantra and see how it shifts you.
The Process of Moving Through Change
There actually is a science of change & a process to move through it and thrive. I’ve written about it in “destressifying” and I teach it at my Healing Immersions. It requires a daily practice of quiet contemplation, reflection, releasing what no longer serves you, clarity development, setting intentions, taking action steps, and making a commitment to living your dream. But we can start the innocent unfolding of our relationship to change with a simple yet powerful tool.
First, let’s find out where you are right now? Are you struggling? Resisting? Hiding? Procrastinating? Suffering? Making poor decisions or non-nourishing choices due to your relationship with change?
As the twists and turns of life unfold, we often struggle or suffer with how we receive change, understand it, respond to it, cope with it and move through it. Our response to change can impact every facet of our being as we freeze, defend, protect, withdraw or wallow. But we can gracefully deal with change and powerfully shift towards turning this constant fact of life into powerful transformation.
This is why I regularly recite the serenity prayer. And, whether you believe in God or not, understanding the serenity prayer can make a huge difference in how we receive existence. The prayer goes like this:
Dear (Lord, God, Universe, Higher power, divine creator, or whatever feels right to you):
Grant me the serenity to ACCEPT THE THINGS I CANNOT CHANGE.
The courage to CHANGE THE THINGS I CAN.
And the wisdom TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE.

For the next few weeks, let’s commit to starting our day reciting the serenity prayer. That wisdom to know the difference, will help us soar through change.

Are You Failing At Life? Clue: You Really Need to Be

What does failure mean to you? What does success mean to you? What do you think is the difference between the two?
Many people believe success to be about acquisition. When we acquire wealth, property, status and power, we are generally deemed to be successful.
Failure is often considered to be the absence of any or all of the above accomplishments. So, if we don’t have cash stashed in the bank, we’re failing. If we don’t own our own home, we’re failing. If we don’t have the perfect relationship, we’re failing. If we don’t have 5 million Twitter followers, we’re failing.
If I asked you if you are failing in life, what would you say?
Hold that thought.

Let’s take the word ‘fail’ and play around with it a little. What about if we think of it as an acronym for Forever Acquiring Important Lessons?

Let me ask you again, are you failing?
I am.
Every. Damn. Day.
Every single day I learn something new. I discover things about myself, about the world, things that I thought I knew, things that I never thought about knowing. I’m failing all over the place. Me? My life? Failing.
And I hope I keep failing. I hope I never get to a point where I stop learning important lessons. Because life lessons are the kind of acquisitions that actually matter. The ones that keep the emptiness away. The ones that never depreciate in value and always hold their worth.
Unless you’ve been living on another planet for the last fifteen years, you’ve probably heard of the Harry Potter fantasy series. You probably also know that J.K. Rowling is the wonderfully creative imagination who put pen to paper and brought Harry to life.
What you may not perhaps know is that J.K. Rowling submitted the Harry Potter manuscript to twelve publishing houses, all of which rejected her work. So, what did she do? She kept on failing. In fact, she failed so much that she has now sold over 400 million copies of her books. This, from a single mother who had been living in poverty, had witnessed her own mothers long illness and subsequent death, had coped with the break up of her marriage and had dealt with depression, and had in fact contemplated suicide.
She is now a multi millionaire.
She created a brand that is now worth an estimated $15 billion.
How’s that for a fail?
Remember: Forever Acquiring Important Lessons.
I love reading her personal story and I feel such an affinity with her in many ways – as a writer, as a female and most importantly as a human. She knew struggle, she battled demons, she was rejected multiple times. And she just kept going. She kept learning. She kept failing on a glorious scale.
Ultimately, I think her success may better be defined by her courageous heart rather than by her millions. I’m inspired more by her bravery than I am by her bank account.

I’m reminded that every rejection is an opportunity to choose another path, every pain is a chance to fuel a new adventure and every single dark, terrifying moment is a time to be truly empowered.

Come and fail with me. Let’s make this the journey of our lives. @SkylarLiberty

Meditate On

So she lay at his feet until morning and rose before one could recognize another…Again he said, “Give me the cloak that is on you and hold it.” So she held it, and he measured six measures of barley and laid it on her. Then she went into the city.
Ruth 3:14–15, NASB
Rest Yields Far More Results
When Ruth worked from morning to evening in the field of Boaz, a wealthy relative, she collected only one measure of barley. That’s about 10 days’ supply. But when she simply rested overnight at his feet, he gave her six measures of barley—about two months’ supply!
Boaz, Ruth’s kinsman redeemer, is a picture of Jesus our Redeemer, whom we are to rest in. This rest refers to an inner posture of trust and quiet confidence in Jesus’ finished work and in His ability to give you increase and good success as you go about doing what you need to do. Rest is not sitting around doing nothing and waiting for His blessings to fall into our laps.
Beloved, what God doesn’t want you to do is worry and do things out of fear. He wants you to rest at Jesus’ feet and listen to His words of love and life. Let Him drive out your fears and lead you to good success!

YOU OWE YOU

Thank GOD It's Monday

WHAT UP WHAT UP WHAT UP, it’s ya boy ET!

Friend, it’s Monday and you’ve made it through another week! I think it’s really important to visually remind yourself of your goals. You must decide exactly what it is that you desire for your future. Take some time to really think about what specific goals you want to accomplish. It’s much easier to be led astray when you are not fully aware of or confident in the circumstances you wish to create in your life. Once you decide what your goal is, write it down along with the steps necessary to complete the desired task. Staying committed is a whole lot easier if, you are reminded of your dreams every day.

Nothing in life can be guaranteed, but anything can be yours if you’re willing to work for it! You have to decide what type of relationship you want with your family and what it will take to reach your personal financial and health goals. There is no room for vagueness in your desires! Being specific about where you want your journey to take you will help you minimize the time spent being sidetracked and unfocused by irrelevant tasks and issues. Don’t wake up any day without a purpose! Seize the moment so that you can build on the current opportunities you have, while making room for others that are sure to come.

You’re Not Good Enough to Be Disappointed

You’re Not Good Enough to Be Disappointed

Dan John is a weightlifting coach. He is well-known in the fitness world for keeping things simple. As regular readers know, simplicity matches up well with my exercise philosophy. (Dan John also has two first names. And you should always fear a man with two first names.)
Anyway, I recently heard Dan John say,
I often tell my new athletes: “Sorry, you just are not good enough to be disappointed.”
In other words, in the beginning you need to get comfortable with feeling stupid, uncertain, and unskilled. You’re not allowed to be disappointed by your amateur performance because you haven’t developed the skills of a professional yet. It’s only the professionals that are allowed to be disappointed because they have put in the work to be better.
  • J.K Rowling is allowed to be disappointed if she writes a bad book because she put in twenty years of work to get good.
  • Kobe Bryant is allowed to be disappointed if he plays a bad game because he put in twenty years of work to become amazing.
  • When he was alive, Jack LaLanne was allowed to be disappointed with a bad workout because he trained for sixty years to stay fit.
But you and me? We’re not good enough to be disappointed yet. We’re bad enough to get to work.

Bad Enough to Get to Work

In the beginning, you’re still learning. You’re still developing. You’re still building. You haven’t developed enough competency to feel disappointed by your performance. You’re supposed to feel stupid and unskilled.
Of course, it’s easy to forget to give yourself some slack when you’re starting a journey that is important to you. Usually, the people who have the least right to feel disappointed are the ones who get down on themselves the most.
  • We feel disappointed when we start a new job and don’t do it as well as we would like.
  • We feel disappointed when we set fitness goals for ourselves and don’t reach them.
  • We feel disappointed when we finally work up the courage to start our first business and it fails.
  • We feel disappointed when we write our first book and nobody reads it.
  • We feel disappointed when we pitch someone on our great idea and they don’t care.
But the start is supposed to be a struggle. In fact, it’s all supposed to be a struggle. The approach of professionals is an indication of just how strongly struggle is linked to success. The Richard Bransons and Jerry Seinfelds and Tom Clancys of the world see failure as a signal to re-commit to the process, not as a reason to wallow in disappointment.
And if that’s the way that the best in the world approach their craft, then that’s how you and I should approach our goals as well.

You’re not good enough to be disappointed. You’re bad enough to get to work. @james_clear

Sealed By God

Sealed By God

We don’t often hear about signet rings anymore; but in Bible times, they were very significant. The signet ring was used to identify the message or messenger and the authority they had. In other words, you knew something was from the king because it was marked by his signet ring. It was representative of power and authority. This verse is saying that you are the mark of authority of Almighty God. You have been chosen and set apart to be identified with Him.
When you have someone’s power and authority, you have access to everything they have. It’s like having power of attorney; you have the authority to act on behalf of that individual. As a believer in Jesus, you are marked with His seal. Think of all you have access to today! Think about the authority you have. Everything He has is available to you—healing, provision, strength, peace, joy. You have been given authority to “sign His name” in order to receive His blessings. You are God’s seal, and you are marked to live the abundant life He has in store for you!
A Prayer for Today
“Father, thank You for choosing me and calling me Your own. Help me to fully understand the authority You’ve given by Your Son, Jesus. I receive all You have for me in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Good Morning!

Good Morning Friends,

I pray your all doing well today.  Life is full of ups and downs but how you respond to those challenges determines your ability to bounce back and get through them.  We all experience embarrassing moments, death of loved ones or close friends, loss of jobs, illnesses, failed relationships etc. I want to you know that you are not alone.  Yes I've been sick, lost loved ones to cancer, experienced job loss and failed relationships.  In each of these circumstances I was taken back.  Some even knocked me to the ground.  I've cried, screamed, and withdrew myself from the world, none of this helped.  Through the most difficult situations I learned to pray more and trust God to help me.  I begin to study the word of God and I wrote down scriptures that strengthened me and helped me to stay focused.  I pray daily and even throughout the day asking God to help me and guide me.  I also went to therapy which helped me to work through the trauma and pain.  I found therapy to be a safe place where I could take off the filters and be brutally honest about my feelings, fears, and cares.  Even now I'm going through some challenges, your not alone.  It's not always easy but if you make up in your mind that you will get through this, you will.  Pray, ask God to help you.  Seek Him, study the word and I promise you, things will get better.  I can't tell you when this will happen, it's in God's timing.  Trust the process, I know it is hard.  I'm there right now.  However I refuse to give up or give in.  I won't stop until I've overcome every obstacle that's trying to hinder me.  You can and you will make it!  #StandStrong!

Below are some scriptures that will help you.  Meditate on these.

Mark 11:24
New International Version

Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

Philippians 4:19
New King James Version

And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:19-20
New King James Version

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.
